Lab Grown Diamond or Moissanite: Which to Choose for a Christmas Proposal

A lot of people arrive at a proposal with the same question and nobody to ask it to: should the ring hold a lab grown diamond or a moissanite? The two look similar in a photograph, cost very different amounts, and get described loosely enough online that it is hard to tell what you are actually buying. Here is the plain version.

What a lab grown diamond is

A lab grown diamond is a diamond. Same carbon, same crystal structure, same hardness as a stone pulled out of the ground. It is grown in a machine over a few weeks instead of forming underground, and a gemmologist cannot tell the difference by eye. It tests as a diamond because it is one.

Every lab grown diamond we set is certified by IGI, which grades it the same way a mined diamond is graded: carat, colour, clarity, cut. If you want the reassurance of a grading report with the ring, this is the stone that comes with one of that kind.

What moissanite is

Moissanite is not a diamond and we will never call it one. It is silicon carbide, a different mineral with its own optical behaviour. It is very hard, very bright, and genuinely beautiful, but it is a separate stone and anyone who sells it to you as a "moissanite diamond" is blurring something that should not be blurred.

Our moissanite comes with GRA certification. It is the right choice for a lot of buyers; it is simply a different thing from a diamond, and knowing which one is on the finger matters if the ring is going to be worn for decades.

How they behave once it is on her hand

Both will survive daily wear. Diamond is the hardest material there is, so a lab grown diamond is the more scratch-resistant of the two over a lifetime of knocking against door handles and keyboards. Moissanite is close behind and holds up fine in practice.

The visible difference is the way they throw light. Moissanite has a higher refractive index, so it flashes more colour, which some people love and others find a little too much. A lab grown diamond returns light in the way people expect a diamond to. In a jewellery shop under bright lamps the difference is obvious; across a dinner table it mostly is not.

The price difference, honestly

Moissanite costs substantially less per carat than a lab grown diamond, and a lab grown diamond costs substantially less than a mined one of the same specification. That is the whole reason both stones exist as options. A budget that buys a modest lab grown solitaire will buy a considerably larger moissanite, and a budget that would stretch to a small mined diamond will buy a lab grown stone with room left over for a better setting.

Worth saying: the setting is not the place to economise. We cast in solid 10K, 14K and 18K gold with the karat running right through the piece, never plated, because a plated ring worn every day will show wear within a year no matter what is set in it.

So which one

If the person you are proposing to would want to know the stone is a diamond, or would want a graded report in the box, choose the lab grown diamond. If size and sparkle for the money matter more, and she is relaxed about the stone being moissanite, choose the moissanite and put the saving into carat weight or a nicer setting. Both sit alongside everything else in our engagement rings collection. Neither answer is the clever one; they are answers to different questions.

Ordering in time for Christmas

Every ring we make is made to order, which is why the date matters more than it would in a shop with stock on a shelf. It takes four business days to make and dispatch a piece, and four business days in transit. That makes eight business days door to door.

Working back from Christmas Eve, the last safe order date is Monday 14 December 2026. Ordering by Friday 11 December gives you a day of margin. After the 14th we will still make the ring, and it will still be beautiful, but we cannot promise it arrives before the 25th, and we would rather say so now than apologise later.

If you do not know her ring size

Most people proposing do not, and it is not a problem. Order the size you think is closest and we will help you adjust it afterwards. Returns are free for 60 days and delivery is free worldwide with taxes included, so getting the size slightly wrong costs you nothing but a little time.

If you would rather get it right first time, we have a separate guide on working out her size discreetly, and the WhatsApp line is answered by someone who does this all day if you would prefer to just ask.

The short version

A lab grown diamond is a real diamond, IGI certified, and costs a fraction of a mined one. Moissanite is a different stone, GRA certified, brighter, and cheaper again. Both are set in solid gold here. Order by 14 December for Christmas, and if the size is wrong you have 60 days to fix it for free.
