How to Find Her Ring Size Without Her Knowing

Start with a ring she already owns

The single most reliable way to learn her size is to borrow a ring she already wears, and the ring finger of her dominant hand is usually within half a size of the other hand. Look for a ring she wears on the fourth finger rather than a thumb ring or a pinky ring, because those are sized very differently. Take it from a jewelry box rather than off her hand, and put it back the same day.

Once you have it, there are two simple ways to read the size at home. Slide the ring down one of your own fingers until it stops, then mark that spot with a pen and have a jeweler measure your finger at the mark. Or lay the ring flat on a ruler and measure straight across the inside of the band, edge to edge, in millimetres. An inside diameter of about 16.5 mm is roughly a US size 6, about 17.3 mm is roughly a size 7, and about 15.7 mm is roughly a size 5. Measure twice, and write the number down rather than trusting your memory.

Ask the people who already know

Her mother, her sister and her closest friend are better sources than any trick. If you are worried about the secret getting out, ask one person only, and ask them in a way that sounds ordinary rather than urgent. Another quiet route is a jewelry wish list or a saved shopping cart: many people note their size there without thinking about it. If she has ever had a ring resized, the jeweler who did it may still have the record.

The string trick, and why we would not rely on it

Wrapping a strip of paper or a piece of string around a sleeping finger is the method the internet loves, and it is the one that goes wrong most often. String stretches, paper slips, fingers swell and shrink through the day and with the weather, and a sleeping hand is not a fair measurement. Treat it as a last resort rather than a plan, and if it is all you have, measure three times on three different evenings and take the largest result.

If you have to guess

A sensible guess beats no ring at all. In the United States, women's ring sizes most often fall between a size 5 and a size 7, with 6 and 6.5 the most common. If her hands are slim, lean towards 5.5 or 6; if they are broader, lean towards 7. Wide bands and eternity-style rings fit more tightly than a thin solitaire band, so with a wide design it is worth going half a size up. If she has larger knuckles than the base of her finger, the ring has to pass the knuckle, which again points to the larger size.

What happens if the size is wrong

Every piece at The Karat Store is made to order in solid 10K, 14K or 18K gold, never plated, so the ring is made to the size you choose rather than picked off a shelf. If it arrives and the fit is not right, you have 60 days to return it free of charge, and delivery is free worldwide. If you would rather sort the size out before you order, message the team on WhatsApp at +1 647 547 3342 or write to contact@thekaratstore.com and ask before you place the order. It is a short conversation and it saves a return.

Order in time for Christmas

Because every ring is made to order, timing matters more than it would in a shop with stock on the shelf. Making and dispatch take four business days and delivery takes another four, which is eight business days in all. For a ring to arrive before Christmas Day 2026, place the order by Monday 14 December. Ordering on Friday 11 December gives you a day of margin. After the 14th the ring can still be made, but it may arrive after Christmas, so if the date is the point, order earlier rather than hoping.

Where to start looking

If you already know roughly what she likes, start with the main engagement ring collection and narrow down from there. Lab grown diamonds come with IGI certification, moissanite comes with GRA certification, and natural diamonds come with GIA certification, so you can see exactly what you are buying in each case. Genuine Montana sapphires are stocked too, if she would rather have colour than a clear stone.

A short checklist before you order

Borrow a ring she wears on the right finger and measure its inside diameter. Check your number with one person who would know. Decide whether the design is wide or thin, and round up rather than down if you are unsure. Ask the team if you are still not certain. Then place the order by 14 December so the ring is in your hands before Christmas Day. Getting the size slightly wrong is a fixable problem; running out of time is not.
