Choosing a word
Short works best. Each letter takes one to four characters, so a five-letter word already spans a considerable length of a band or chain.
Three to five letters sits comfortably on a ring: LOVE, MOM, HOPE, a set of initials
Six to eight letters suits a necklace, where there is more room
Names and dates work, though long names get unwieldy and are better abbreviated to initials
A practical note: spaces between words are hard to render legibly in jewellery, so single words and initials read more cleanly than phrases.
Why solid gold matters here
The dots and dashes are small raised elements or set stones, and those are the first places plating wears through, because they catch on everything. Once the coating goes at a high point, the base metal shows as a dark spot in the middle of your message.
Solid gold has no coating to lose, and can be polished to restore the surface.
