Why 14K wins for engagement rings

An engagement ring gets worn every day for the rest of a life. It knocks against desks, steering wheels, gym equipment and kitchen counters. 14K sits at the point where the color still reads properly golden but the alloy is hard enough to resist that abuse.

18K is richer in color but softer. 10K is tougher and cheaper but paler. For a ring that never comes off, 14K is the compromise almost everyone lands on.

• White is rhodium plated for brightness. That plating wears and needs redoing every few years; the solid gold underneath is unaffected.

• Rose uses more copper, which makes it the hardest of the three.

Solid gold can be resized, repaired and reworked by any competent jeweler. Plated and gold filled rings cannot. If you are buying as a surprise, order your best guess and have it adjusted afterwards.
