What Does CTW Mean in Jewelry?

CTW stands for total carat weight: the combined weight of every stone in a piece. CT on its own usually refers to a single stone, most often the centre one.

The distinction sounds pedantic. It is the single most common way jewelry listings mislead buyers.

Why it matters

Compare two rings, both advertised at 2 carats:

• Ring A: a 2 ct centre stone, plain band

• Ring B: 2 ctw total, made up of a 0.75 ct centre plus 60 tiny accent stones

Ring A has one substantial stone. Ring B has a centre stone barely over a third the size. They can be advertised with the same number, and Ring A will cost several times more, because large stones are disproportionately more valuable than the same weight split into small ones.

When a listing quotes only a ctw figure, the centre stone is usually smaller than you assume.

How to read a listing properly

• Look for the centre stone weight stated separately. If it is absent, ask.

• Check the millimetre dimensions of the centre stone, which cannot be gamed the way weight can.

• Treat ctw as a description of overall sparkle, not stone size.

For tennis bracelets and eternity bands, ctw is the correct and honest measure, because there is no centre stone. A 3 ctw tennis bracelet means three carats spread across the whole line, which is exactly what you want to know.

Why big stones cost more per carat

Large rough crystals are rarer than small ones, and cutting wastes material. A 2 ct diamond costs far more than two 1 ct diamonds, which in turn cost far more than twenty 0.1 ct stones. Price per carat rises steeply with size.
