How Much Does Karat Change the Price? Real Numbers

If you want to know which karat to choose, read our karat buying guide. This page answers a narrower question: exactly how much money the choice saves you, measured rather than estimated.

We pulled 784 products from our catalog where the same design is offered in all three karats, and compared the prices.

The result

18K is the base price
14K costs 12% less than the same design in 18K
10K costs 22% less

Those figures held on virtually every design we checked. The median difference was exactly 12% and 22%, with almost no variation.

Why the gap is smaller than the gold content

Here is the part that surprises people. The actual gold content differs by far more than the price does.

18K is 75% pure gold
14K is 58.3% pure
10K is 41.7% pure

So 14K contains about 22% less gold than 18K, yet costs only 12% less. 10K contains 44% less gold, yet costs 22% less.

The reason is that metal is only part of what you pay for. The center stone, the accent stones, the setting labour, the casting, the finishing and the certification cost exactly the same regardless of karat. Only the gold portion scales down.

The practical consequence: the cheaper karats are proportionally worse value in pure metal terms, but they are still the simplest way to cut the price of a piece you have already chosen.

What this means in money

On a ring priced at $2,000 in 18K:

14K brings it to roughly $1,760, saving $240
10K brings it to roughly $1,560, saving $440

On a $5,000 piece the same percentages save $600 and $1,100.

So on inexpensive pieces the karat choice is a small saving and you may as well buy the color you prefer. On larger purchases it is real money, and worth deciding deliberately.

The trade-off you are buying

Dropping karat gets you a harder, more scratch-resistant piece with a paler color and slightly more chance of skin reaction. It also holds less metal value: at current gold prices, 18K contains roughly $103 of gold per gram, 14K about $80 and 10K about $57.

Method

784 products exported from our live catalog in September 2026, each offering 10K, 14K and 18K on the same design. For each product we took the median variant surcharge against the 18K base, then aggregated across products. A small number of records with data-entry anomalies were excluded.
