The marquise cut is a long, pointed oval, and it does something for a necklace that round stones cannot: set end to end, the points meet and the line reads as continuous rather than as a row of separate stones.

All are solid gold in 10K, 14K and 18K rather than plated, which matters more on a necklace than on almost anything else: a chain rubs against skin and clothing all day, and plating wears through at exactly those friction points within a year or two.

Tennis necklace or pendant?

A tennis necklace sets stones continuously around the whole length. It is the bigger statement and the bigger purchase, and weight is quoted as total carat weight across the line, since there is no centre stone.

A marquise pendant or drop places one or two stones on a chain. Far less expensive, easier to layer with other chains, and better for everyday wear.

Practical notes before buying

Length. 16 inches sits at the base of the neck, 18 at the collarbone, 20 below it. For layering, separate lengths by at least two inches.
The points. Marquise stones have two tips, the most vulnerable part of the cut. Check that the setting protects them with prongs or a bezel.
Clasp. On a tennis necklace the clasp carries the whole weight. Solid gold clasps can be repaired; plated ones cannot.
Total carat weight. On a tennis style, ctw describes every stone combined. It is the honest measure here, unlike on a ring.
